The loch shows an infinite variety of faces as the light hits it on different days.

Lucky used to be a stray girl but has now found her new identity as a Donich Lodge boy (the vet discovered he was male when we took “her” to be spayed). He would ask you to respect his new pronouns.

The high mountain pass over the Rest and be Thankful is the main route out of the village. Here it is in winter.

Spring sky over the mountain tops.

Sunset from our front door step.

A misty moon over the mountains as darkness falls.

View over towards the loch from near the summit of Cnoc Coinnich.

A rainbow appears in a clear interval between showers.

Lochgoilhead in the distance on a clear spring morning.

As the year turns, the mountains are white on most days.

Looking across the loch from the village, clouds form a band across the hills.

Tora and Schrodi our snow Bengal brothers used to live here. RIP both of you

A dragonfly pauses for a rest by the side of our pond.

The weather here can be appalling. Here gales and torrential rain have blocked one of the village’s few roads.

The colours on the mountains fade to muted browns as autumn approaches.

The Donich Water in one of its kinder moods as it runs through our garden.

One of a myriad insects pollinating our heather.

A group of wild haggis have made a den down by the river.

Our new Highland Tiger Saphy prowling her territory. She is a demon for the wildlife with her specialized prey item being shrews. She is not adverse to mice, voles or birds however.

This is Amber aka as Bramble. She is big, black, rather podgy and a bit of a scaredy cat. We had her cloned shortly after she arrived.

Although we don’t get much snow at loch level, the higher mountains are covered for five months or so of the year

Sixth Day of Mousemas

Most years I bake some Christmas cakes.  My Dad always liked them, and my Mum still does, though I thinks she prefers the marzipan and icing to the cake part. So this year I baked a vegan one for Rory’s sister and two half size ones as “Christmas Logs” – one for J and one […]

Fifth Day of Mousemas

When I left the lounge last night, the bag was standing upright and the mouse was perched on top of it. This morning the bag was on its side and the mouse beside it.  Unless we have a velveteen rabbit scenario here, Lucky has seen fit to retrieve his mouse during the night.  He is […]

Fourth Day of Mousemas

We don’t get many Christmas cards, I suppose because we don’t send many. Normally I “make” a card with some photos of Lochgoilhead and environs, but this year I pushed out the boat and actually drew my own card and printed it off. The three cats are Amber who is posting a Mousemas card (inception […]

Third Day of Mousemas

Made some mince pies today. Last year I had to buy shop made ones because I had my arm in a sling, but this year I reverted to normal and made them from scratch. Mine are much less sweet than the shop ones as I don’t put sugar in the pastry. You actually see them […]

Second Day of Mousemas

Went out to Tir na Og in Drymen today for lunch with R’s sister V who I haven’t seen in years. We had a very nice lunch (the homemade scones with jam and cream are very good) and then looked at the New Age style shops. Perhaps surprisingly, I quite like this kind of thing, […]

First Day of Mousemas

It is the first day of Mousemas today.  As all Donich followers will know, this a cat festival which runs from the 18th to 29th December (by a complete co-incidence, this is also R’s birthday), and is the spiritual successor to the ancient festival of Vole. We humans are finding out new traditions about Mousemas […]

Surviving a power outage

SSE decided in their wisdom to take the entire village off grid all day today. This is stupid in many ways a) it is cold b) it is dark c) many people have a lot to do with Christmas next week d) children are off school. Say they did this work in June – there […]

Slobs are us

J turned up here in a jumper with a hole in it, a stain down the front, and a logo which had so disappeared into the fabric that it looked like another stain. Bear in mind that J is moderately wealthy – a new jumper is not in any way beyond his means. So I […]

London and back

Went to London with R for a few days to deliver a workshop on computer security. That went pretty well but I won’t burden you on the contents of it as this blog is supposed to be about Highland Life and not Kubernetes (go look it up). After the workshop we went for a walkaround […]

Continuing the theme

Sorry to harp on, but the freeze continues. R and I went round the Inverlounin loop this morning to search for icicles. We found some. I had been a bit worried about the paths being slippy – though it has been so dry that they weren’t particularly. It is supposed to thaw tomorrow – but […]
