A quiz?
What is the worst journey in mainland UK to undertake by any means of transport in January?
My contender for this title is Lochgoilhead to Little Walsingham.
Car – nine hours drive (not including breaks). A significant portion of this is on bad roads, first in Scotland and then in Norfolk.
Flight – only vaguely feasible airport is Stansted and the only flights are 7:20am or 9:20pm. Then train to Kings Lynn (change in Ely). Then bus from Kings Lynn. c. 9 hours if no delays
Bus – From Glasgow overnight to London, bus to Norwich, change at Fakenham to another bus. This takes J c. 18 hours. He swears by it, but from here you would need to add another two hours to get to Glasgow.
Train – Helensburgh -> Edinburgh -> Peterborough -> Ely -> Kings Lynn. Then bus to Walsingham. About 10 hours door to door.
My bet is always on the train and I have done this a few times with no problems. Today, however I got up at 5am to catch the 7am from Helensburgh to discover that the driveway is one big sheet of ice and we can’t get the car out. I am going to try later this morning but it means that I won’t get the bus in King’s Lynn and will need to either get a taxi or stay there overnight. The best laid plans o’ mice and men…
R is out trying to de-ice the drive. What looks like water on the drive is actually ice.
