The loch shows an infinite variety of faces as the light hits it on different days.

Lucky used to be a stray girl but has now found her new identity as a Donich Lodge boy (the vet discovered he was male when we took “her” to be spayed). He would ask you to respect his new pronouns.

The high mountain pass over the Rest and be Thankful is the main route out of the village. Here it is in winter.

Spring sky over the mountain tops.

Sunset from our front door step.

A misty moon over the mountains as darkness falls.

View over towards the loch from near the summit of Cnoc Coinnich.

A rainbow appears in a clear interval between showers.

Lochgoilhead in the distance on a clear spring morning.

As the year turns, the mountains are white on most days.

Looking across the loch from the village, clouds form a band across the hills.

Tora and Schrodi our snow Bengal brothers used to live here. RIP both of you

A dragonfly pauses for a rest by the side of our pond.

The weather here can be appalling. Here gales and torrential rain have blocked one of the village’s few roads.

The colours on the mountains fade to muted browns as autumn approaches.

The Donich Water in one of its kinder moods as it runs through our garden.

One of a myriad insects pollinating our heather.

A group of wild haggis have made a den down by the river.

Our new Highland Tiger Saphy prowling her territory. She is a demon for the wildlife with her specialized prey item being shrews. She is not adverse to mice, voles or birds however.

This is Amber aka as Bramble. She is big, black, rather podgy and a bit of a scaredy cat. We had her cloned shortly after she arrived.

Although we don’t get much snow at loch level, the higher mountains are covered for five months or so of the year

Mountain in the mist

It has been terribly, terribly wet here – definitely the worst July we have had since we lived here (and seems like the worst I can remember ever). The weather does from time to time generate some nice views, like this one out to Stob an Eas the other night. There is something almost primeval […]

Cheese and Ham Plait

I made a rather nice lunch on Saturday. I’ve become a bit of a fan of different breads – so this was my take on a stuffed plait. Make a basic white bread dough with 700g flour and prove until doubled in size (you could make a yeast sponge to get it started off if […]

Amazing Summer’s Afternoon

I finished up early today and went for a walk as it was the nicest day we have had all summer. I went all the way to Coran Lochan at the end of the penninsula, and then back along the side of Loch Long, over the 500m pass at Coilessan back to the waterfalls and […]

Sheep Rescue

Today R and I saved our second sheep of the year (back in Feb we pulled one out of a frozen ditch after it got its leg stuck). Early this morning, we set off to do a climb, but when we got to the Rest we realized that the weather was not going to be […]

Goodbye to Mossdale

My Mum and Dad retired to the tiny hamlet of Mossdale about 10 miles from Castle Douglas. With the passing years the garden has got too much for them, and they don’t see as much of my brother N and I as they would want as it is a long and awkward journey from LGH […]

A bit of Family History

My father’s side of the family are from Cumberland, specifically the area around Walton near Carlisle. While clearing stuff out for their move, my father found the plaque above, which he had salvaged from an old clock many years previously. It reads “Presented to J Farrer by the members of the Walton Branch of the […]

A rather sad dish

R and I went for a longish (10m) walk this morning. After a rather unpromising start, the weather was actually very pleasant, if a bit “Goily” . At least the breeze kept the midgies far away. When we got home, we discovered that one of the cats (I suspect S very strongly) had actually put […]

Clearing around the pond

Our pond has been getting a bit overgrown near the stream inlet. At first we just admired the riot of wild flowers, but now it is getting to the stage where if it isn’t cleared out, it is going to turn into a swamp rather than a pond. So over the last few days I […]

Up the Brack

Yippee!! The sun is shining today and I am not working – so off for a climb. This is sort of me playing truant from the garden which badly needs done, but I will do it this afternoon. I had an enjoyable walk up the Brack with great views from the top which were being […]

Shepherd’s Delight

I hope this fantastic sunset is going to herald some better weather – it doesn’t seem to have stopped raining here in weeks. I mean most years here are a bit damp and I don’t mind that, but we hardly had a good day in June, and that included when we were away as J […]
