Goal Achieved
After my first abortive operation I was pretty much convinced I would never walk normally again. My foot was basically a fair degree worse than it had been before the operation and was so tilted over to one side that I couldn’t put it flat to the floor or walk without considerable pain.
Several weeks after the revision (corrective) operation which basically involved having everything done in the first place ripped out and replaced (or to put it a different way, after I had had the operation I should have had in the first place), I managed to summon up enough courage to ask the new surgeon if he thought I was going to be able to walk without special orthotics, a limp or a stick. He immediately said with no doubt in his voice that it was very likely that I would.
After my final meeting with him eight weeks after the operation, I asked him if realistically I could be walking five miles by Christmas. He said “possibly” but this time I think he was a little more dubious (about the time scale of me being able to do it so soon).
It is four months since my operation. R and I walked out round the community gardens, down the coach road as far as Drimsynie Beg and back. Just over six miles.
I’ll give a lot of credit to the surgeon who fixed me, but a degree of kudos to myself as well as I have managed to keep going even though sometimes I felt like giving up.
Still hoping to improve further, but I am broadly ok now.
