A taste test
As part of my further investigation into ultra-processed food, R and I tried a taste test.
We are both fond of yoghurt. I eat natural Skyr with fresh fruit – ingredients: milk, fruit and R eats raspberry Ski – Ingredients – Low Fat Yogurt (Milk), Sugar, raspberry Puree from Concentrate (2.5%), Rice Starch, Natural Flavourings, Concentrated Lemon Juice, Red Beetroot Juice Concentrate, Natural Flavouring. Thickener (Guar Gum), Raspberry: Low Fat Yogurt (Milk), Sugar, Raspberry Puree from Concentrate (2.5%), Rice Starch, Red Beetroot Juice Concentrate, Concentrated Lemon Juice, Natural Flavouring, Thickener (Guar Gum). I was actually surprised at how UPF this actually was.
As a little challenge, I gave R a blind taste test of a) his normal Ski b) a “Light and Low” raspberry yoghurt (basically a commercially made one only with artificial sweetener rather than sugar c) one made by me with unsweetened natural yoghurt, fresh raspberries and a little stevia powder (I personally would not have added the stevia, but it would have been too sharp for him without it). He identified a) as being “very synthetic probably the one with artificial sweeteners b) really delicious lots of fruit but probably very fattening c) yuck – this tastes really funny. I had to laugh because he has been eating that Ski yoghurt for years, and the Light and Low one was much lower calorie than it was. As to “yuck” all I can say is welcome to what real food tastes like.
But the last laugh was on me because I thought the Light and Low was very delicious – creamy and packed with real fruit pieces. These are its ingredients which are no worse than the Ski one
Yogurt (Milk), Raspberry (10%), Oligofructose (Fibre), Starches (Potato, Tapioca), Modified Maize Starch, Stabilisers (Pectin, Guar Gum), Acidity Regulators (Sodium Citrate, Lactic Acid, Calcium Citrate), Flavourings, Grape Concentrate, Sweeteners (Acesulfame K, Sucralose), Vitamin D
So yes very nice and fine for a treat from time to time – but I am not moving off my natural Skyr.
