More plum crumble

I really do love plum crumble – but only made with real Victoria plums. Around this time of year I get them from the local greengrocer and make a simple topping of wholemeal flour, muesli and a little butter and sugar. I don’t put anything like the amount of either of the “naughty” ingredients in as most recipes, and I don’t put sugar in the plums which are plenty sweet enough anyway.

Now we have the option of getting our meat, fish and at least some of our vegetables locally, I am doing this. So every two weeks I order up all the meat and fish we need for the next fortnight from Fynest fish, plus I have a look to see what they have that is grown in Argyll (or at least in Scotland). I don’t buy anything from them that comes from abroad, because it is the same stuff as ASDA sell only much more expensive. But this year I have had local soft fruit, potatoes, beans, samphire and now the plums. Not only is this better food to eat (seasonable and hasn’t been transported a long way), but it is more ecologically sound.

This autumn I am going to try out the possibility of some wild game (without telling R I am doing it). Unfortunately I have tried cooking venison many times and I am afraid I am not fond of either its taste or its texture. This is a shame as it really is a locally produced food here; in fact I could get a crossbow out and produce some myself in the back garden.

Just going through the last few days of the wheelchair/crutches now, as in theory I am full weight bearing again this week. I won’t be sorry; the really frustrating thing about the wheelchair in this house is that everything very nearly (but not quite) works. By which I mean that some of the doors are just a bit narrow for comfort, the raised lintels at the doors are super annoying, the shower has one irritating lip that makes getting in and out difficult. Nearly there though, although I will be wearing the Aircast boot for a while after that. I really really hope that my foot will be properly fixed this time – one way or another I have been partially incapacitated for nearly a year now.
