Strawberries
We used to have a big patch of wild strawberries in the garden but they died off a few years ago. This week I noticed that a new patch had appeared – and yesterday I collected the first few to have ripened. They were pretty good, but I’ll be honest here (though whispering) not as good as the Scottish strawberries in the shops at this time of year. During the winter all strawberries are rubbish – the fresh imported ones taste like turnips, and strawberries neither can nor freeze well.
So they are a rara avis in the modern world – a food item which is genuinely seasonal – at least in the sense that it is not worth eating out of season.
