Chowder and homemade cottage loaf

This was the homemade chowder we had for lunch today. Some people put smoked bacon in theirs, but I am not that keen on it, so I just leave it out.

Served with a homemade cottage loaf. I use the breadmaker to make the dough (with my dodgy arm kneading dough would be very difficult). As a crafty trick, I make the dough on the pizza setting which only takes 45 minutes. I then shape it, and leave it to prove for 30 minutes or so before cooking – works nicely for shaped loaves or rolls. For ordinary tin loaves, however, I just put the loaf on the “Quick brown loaf” program, and in two hours it mixes, kneads and bakes a large loaf of bread.

The breadmaker is one of the best things we have bought – this particular one has been in daily use for about six meals. The bread it makes is cheaper and much nicer than the supermarket stuff.
