A bit of nature’s bounty

I picked what was left of the easily accessible brambles today.  When I was a child we used to say that on 1st October the devil spat on the brambles and you shouldn’t eat them after that.  There is some truth in the date thing because as autumn progresses they tend to be either wizened up, rotten or just tasteless.

I shall make a pie with these because I am afraid bramble jelly is too much hassle – I always stain my hands with it and generally cats involve themselves.  I don’t think Tora will any more though.  He is very old and really just sleeps all the time – he doesn’t even go down the village any more.

He is nearly 20 and I don’t suppose he has much longer.  When he dies a big piece of my heart will go into the grave with him.
