Earth stood hard as iron

Bitterly cold today at -5 first thing this morning. I am reminded of the Christmas Carol “earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone” as I had to run the birds’ bowl of water under the hot tap for ten minutes as it had frozen solid overnight. I refilled it with warm water at 10:30am and by 3pm it was frozen solid again – never seen that happen in UK before.

The lawn and the cars did not defrost at all yesterday, and haven’t today either. We had been supposed to be going to see my parents in Rhu today and drop the old carpet off at the tip (sorry “Recycling Centre”) but R has somehow acquired a cold, in spite of having seen no one apart from me all week.

Every tree is frosted with ice, and the birds and squirrels are getting keener on their seeds and nuts by the day.
