Holiday in Devon

Holiday in Devon

Took my Mum down south for a holiday in Devon.  We stayed in a beautiful cottage in Newton Poppleford near Sidmouth.  Unfortunately the weather was very far from beautiful – we had been going to have a swanky Devon Champagne Cream tea on Saturday, but unfortunately the rain was so torrential that the roads were flooded.  I get the impression that they are not really set up for that kind of weather in Devon the way we are in Argyll and all the drains by the side of the road were blocked.  So we gave up and went home – I never did get to take a photo of the iconic Sidmouth street which featured as “Styemouth” in “Little Pig Robinson” by Beatrix Potter.

Anyway, we had a better day on Sunday as we went to Paignton Zoo and saw lots of cool animals.  Then we went on the Dartmouth Steam Railway “Santa Express” which was also great.  Strangely enough for the south of England, the engine was called “Braveheart”.

I’m not sure I would do a holiday in the UK in December again though.  We were lucky that it wasn’t completely ruined by the weather.
