A Major Effort

R and I have decided to have a go at climbing Mont Blanc next year. This is the highest mountain in Europe at 4808m – so no minor challenge. As a preparation for it – we are going to climb Mount Tiede in Tenerife in January – this is a mere 3718m.

I actually thought I was pretty fit until yesterday when I started to train for this. I put on a 20kg pack and walked round the Donich Circular. I honestly thought I was not going to make it, and would either collapse or have to leave the pack behind – I honestly think it is the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do in my life – my legs and shoulders were killing me. Anyway – as they say “when the going gets tough, the tough get going” and I did manage to stagger round it. I also managed to do another walk carrying the pack this morning – so I am doing reasonably well for 50 I suppose.

Everything is now looking very autumnal – the picture is of a tree just outside our garden which is showing some spectacular colours.
