We are really lucky we did not give up and assume they had been killed by the late frosts (I had been talking to R about pulling them out and planting some new ones) because now they are magnificent (and will be more so in a few days). In fact there are about twice as many flowers as last year. This afternoon it was sunny and there were huge dragonflies darting about, so after over a week of dull, moist and midge-ridden days it made me realize why we like summer again.
