Donich – Donich Website https://www.donich.co.uk Argyll wildlife and nature as seen on the banks of the Donich Water Thu, 13 Apr 2017 08:12:23 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.7.4 A Goily, Goily Day https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/04/12/a-goily-goily-day/ https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/04/12/a-goily-goily-day/#respond Wed, 12 Apr 2017 07:59:18 +0000 http://www.donich.co.uk/?p=6925 R and I have a term for the typical weather in this area, which is “Goily”.  On a goily day the wind sweeps over Beinn Bheula from the west, and brings waves of cloud, rain and sunshine alternately with it.  The picture doesn’t do it justice, but yesterday we must have had at least ten periods of bright sunshine, immediately followed by murky clouds and driving rain.

It is better than the common Glasgow dreich day when it never seems to get properly daylight, but doesn’t make for very reliable days in the hills because if you wrap up for the rain, you end up melting when the sun comes out five minutes later.

It is Easter weekend and R and I are on holiday next week so I am hoping for the best.

Otter back again https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/23/otter-back-again/ https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/23/otter-back-again/#respond Thu, 23 Mar 2017 13:13:42 +0000 http://www.donich.co.uk/?p=6903 Shortly after we moved in here we saw an otter on the webcam over the pond (it was actually around this time of year).  We didn’t see him again over the next few months and then we had to give up on “Pond Cam” because the network wouldn’t support it and it kept crashing “Shed Cam”.

R recently upgraded our wireless network (he put an external access point on the front of the house and a new high-gain antenna on the camera) and we turned Pond Cam back on.  Well worth it, as not only have we had some great shots of the heron – but also the otter was back last night.  I suspect he has never been away and lives under the wooden bridge across the Donich.  Click on the picture to see the video.

We’ll be keeping a close lookout over the next few weeks – it would be nice to see him out of the water.

I’m also going to put our battery powered trail cam right down at the back near the river and see if we can get any good shots of the deer.  I know they come down there from the copious quantities of poo they leave.

Night of the Sausages https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/22/night-of-the-sausages/ https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/22/night-of-the-sausages/#respond Wed, 22 Mar 2017 22:09:49 +0000 http://www.donich.co.uk/?p=6890 I bought R some super large hot dogs which he didn’t think much to.  So with half the packet left over, I decided to put them out for the badgers.  This was the result, but not quite what we were expecting (click on the picture to see the video).

I’ve no idea where the black cat comes from or who it belongs to, but this is the second time we have seen it in our camera (the first time Tora saw it off).  I hope it has just moved in to the village and knows its way home as we are quite isolated here.  I also hope it isn’t a stray, because it certainly wolfed down the (not particularly appetising) sausages.

If we see it again I’ll have to ask around and see if anyone knows whose it is.  Cats really are strange creatures – here we are in the back of beyond, and not only does Tora walk nearly a mile to the other side of the village to find another cat to fight, but now we have another one doing the same thing in reverse.

The movie should have the music for “10 green bottles” to go with it….

Duke’s Path in the snow https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/22/dukes-path-in-the-snow/ https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/22/dukes-path-in-the-snow/#respond Wed, 22 Mar 2017 12:57:31 +0000 http://www.donich.co.uk/?p=6901 I took a wander up the Duke’s Path towards Coran Lochan today.  The weather was superb, although cold and snowy and the views were first rate.

Obviously no one had been along the path since the snow fell; no one human at least although I saw lots of animal tracks (mostly deer and sheep).

This one was a carnivore.

In the evening the views to the mountains were quite superb – one of the best sunsets I have seen since we have been living here.

Winter back today https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/21/winter-back-today/ https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/21/winter-back-today/#respond Tue, 21 Mar 2017 21:28:22 +0000 http://www.donich.co.uk/?p=6883 The day before yesterday I was saying to R that the last of the snow was gone off the mountains here for the year.  How wrong could I be, because today it was back with a vengeance.  Down here at loch level it was only just cold enough to lie a bit in the back garden, but on Bheula and Donich it was white from around 300m.

Intermittently all day it has been rather pretty with the sun shining on the snow, and surpassingly foul with deluges of slush and hail.

The poor daffodils took a bit of a pasting overnight, but being hardy Argyll flowers they had recovered by this afternoon.

Another good one https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/19/another-good-one/ https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/19/another-good-one/#respond Sun, 19 Mar 2017 20:27:40 +0000 http://www.donich.co.uk/?p=6876 Definitely the best time of the year for wildlife.  This little roe stag visited the webcam area around tea time and made a meal of part of one of our bushes (a very prickly one but they don’t seem to mind the thorns).  You can see the velvet on his lovely new antlers

Frogs here and gone https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/16/frogs-here-and-gone/ https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/16/frogs-here-and-gone/#respond Thu, 16 Mar 2017 20:53:17 +0000 http://www.donich.co.uk/?p=6879 In spite of the constant heron activities, the frogs did finally arrive in our pond, and for about a week we could hear the low burble of their croaking whenever we walked down the drive.  In fact I think the frogs have done very well this year – every pool and puddle seems to be choked with spawn.

Then as suddenly as they appeared they are gone again for another year – leaving a whole corner of our pond (can you have a corner on something round?) a mass of slime.

Badger and Cat https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/16/badger-and-cat/ https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/16/badger-and-cat/#respond Thu, 16 Mar 2017 20:16:58 +0000 http://www.donich.co.uk/?p=6873 The other night we caught this on the webcam (Click on the picture to play the video).   Tora sat for several minutes quietly contemplating a badger which simply ignored him.

Lots of badger activity at the moment – the poor pine marten turned up at 4am one night to find that every single nut had already been consumed by badgers which had been coming and going since about 8pm.

Stuffed loaf and “Spicy Donich Soup” https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/12/stuffed-loaf-and-spicy-donich-soup/ https://www.donich.co.uk/blog/2017/03/12/stuffed-loaf-and-spicy-donich-soup/#respond Sun, 12 Mar 2017 13:12:48 +0000 http://www.donich.co.uk/?p=6869 I made this bread which featured on the bake off a few years ago.  It was seriously nice – although when I make it again I think I will ditch the goats’ cheese as I am not that fond of it.  It certainly looked very good and would make a nice centre piece for a buffet table.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/moroccan_plaited_loaf_51517

To go with it I made some soup – I was havering over whether to call it “Moroccan” or “Spanish” and decided on neither.  Fry two large onions, a green pepper and a red pepper in some olive oil until soft.  Add a chunk (10cm or so) of finely chopped chorizo sausage, a few peeled carrots and three or four garlic cloves and stir about a bit until browning.  Add a heaped tsp of harissa paste and some smoked paprika.  Then add two tins chopped plum tomatoes and water to taste (enough to make it soup rather than stew – unless it is stew you actually want) and simmer until the veg is fully cooked.

Very nice with the bread and associated dip.  Omitting the cheese from the bread and the chorizo from the soup makes it vegan without losing much of the flavour (perhaps add a little more paprika).

The arm in the background belongs to J.
