Rat Attack
This morning, R heard a panicked female voice calling from the attic. He knew M was up there having an early stint sorting out boxes for their move before work. He shot up the ladder to the loft where M was standing staring at the far end of the long room. “Can you hear a noise?” she said. At first he couldn’t hear anything, and then a sort of faint squeaking. R drew closer to the sound – sure enough – there was a noise. “I think it’s a rat!” M said. R started to investigate the insulation at the side of the beams and could hear it more clearly “Sounds more like a bird to me”, he said.
“It’s in that box” M shouted, pointing at an old cat carrier. R picked the box up and yes – the noise was definitely coming from there. “I’ll go and get some gloves” he said, slapping an old book over the carrier lid, and gingerly attempting to carry the box towards the ladder.
“Before you do that”, said M, “What day is it today?”. It took a moment for the date to sink in, and then R pulled the book away. Inside the carrier was M’s iPhone playing a looping track of “Rat Noises”.
I have to say that I have played many April Fool pranks on R, and that was the first one ever to be successful…
