Work for the night is coming

One of my favourite books is “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists” and one of the best bits in it is when the downtrodden workmen start singing “Work for the night is coming…” in front of the boss and his client. The hypocrite boss who is a real whitened sepulchre sort of “Christian” doesn’t dare stop them because it is a hymn.

Which is to say that I have been singing this, and “Old Man River” and “I’ve got stripes” this week, when on top of all my usual activities I have been working five or six hours a day in the garden. J has been ably assisting me, and I will say for him that he is difficult to get moving in the mornings, but once he gets going he keeps right on and gets a lot done.

Following all my medical issues over the last 18 months the garden was looking a real mess and we have been putting in a lot of effort bringing it back to life.

We have pulled out thousands of brambles, raked the paths, trimmed around the pond, chopped down invading saplings and even painted the summerhouse inside and out.

We’ve a bit left to do, but it is already looking a lot better.
