Sixth Day of Mousemas

Sixth Day of Mousemas

Most years I bake some Christmas cakes.  My Dad always liked them, and my Mum still does, though I thinks she prefers the marzipan and icing to the cake part.

So this year I baked a vegan one for Rory’s sister and two half size ones as “Christmas Logs” – one for J and one for my Mum.  With the logs, I had the idea of baking them with a layer of marzipan in the middle, like a simnel cake.  I’ve been feeding them with whisky every week since October.

This was my cake baking production line with the finished article on the right.  I decorated them with fruit and nuts rather than putting bits of plastic crap on them.

In the afternoon I made afternoon tea with my mother’s wedding china.  We had salmon sandwiches, sausage rolls, scones with cream and jam, and specially for R, Sachertorte.  This was the cake he stubbornly refused to try when he was in Vienna, but he could not escape me, and today I inflicted it on him in all its “million calorie a slice” glory.

It is actually a lovely cake, and rather to my taste as (being made with dark chocolate) it is not that sweet.  It is a bit of a hassle to make though, and I am not sure to be honest that R would not just have preferred an ordinary chocolate cake.  But I enjoyed making it.
