A not too successful bake…

I had a go at making the ‘Citrus Meringue Pie’ signature challenge from Bake Off yesterday. The recipe I tried was Jane’s one for Lime and Coconut Meringue Pie and I can’t say that it was entirely successful. The recipe is here RecipeĀ – and I followed it pretty exactly apart from not putting coconut flavouring […]

A Good Night for Wildlife

We’ve been missing seeing our resident badgers over the summer – they have been visiting – but for some reason only in the small hours of the morning. All of a sudden now autumn is here they are back at 9pm. R had the bright idea of moving our light pole into the kitchen – […]

Lovely Sunset

This was the view at sunset today on the way down the Donich Circular walk – quite spectacular. Later, sitting in my office there was a thin crescent moon visible out of the window and lots of bats flitting about – it would have been spooky if it weren’t so lovely.

Beinn Ime

We managed to do Beinn Ime (Butter Mountain) which is the highest of the Arrochar Alps (nearly 1100m) in tandem with its neighbour Beinn Narnain (a slightly smaller Munro) this weekend. Last time we tried this it was so horrible and claggy we gave up on the Beinn Ime section. But this time it was […]

Another Fitbit Badge

They don’t come that often any more as my record steps in a day is 55000 (about 25 miles), and my record flights of stairs over 500. So the only awards I get now are the “lifetime” ones which are actually almost a year to the day since I got the Fitbit Charge – and […]

My go at the Bake Off Fougasse

I’ve been looking for some nice recipes to try from the bake off. From this week’s I was quite taken with the one from the technical challenge – the Fougasse. I made it for playing D&D with my friends this weekend – and it turned out really nice – better (dare I say) than most […]

Home again, home again

We had to get up at 6am to catch our flight. For some reason the priority boarding did not exist at this end, which was just as well as the first people out were decanted to wait for a bus by the side of the road in the baking heat. At least the flight left […]

Rome – Last Day

This was our last day – and I had saved what I thought would be the best for last with a trip down the Appia Antica (the ancient Appian way which is the only still existing road to be mentioned in the Bible). We would take a picnic and meander down the ancient roadway, littered […]

More Ancient Rome

This morning we went on a guided tour of the Domus Aurea – Nero’s Golden House. The guided tour (only on Saturday and Sunday) is the only way to see it as it is still being excavated. It is absolutely amazing – and I am sure will be more so once the work of removing […]

Rome – an interesting side trip

We were getting tired of all the tourists by this point, and J was keen to do something a bit different – so today we set off to find Villa (strangely in Italy this seems to mean ‘park’ rather than ‘house’) Torlonia on the edge of the city. Again we decided to walk as it […]
